Curate - Tarakeeb

“In Arabic, the word means putting things together, and in Hindi, it stands for ideas or techniques. Tarakeeb is our vision, of an artisanal brand inspired by Bahrain”

– Kaneka Subberwal

An exquisite collection of Bahrain-inspired clothing, lifestyle items, furniture, and wall art. Tarakeeb represents a convergence of Bahrain’s creative landscape and a confluence of cross-cultural heritage. It embraces Bahrain’s cultural heritage and honours local artists, craftsmen, and weavers.

The History

The first edition of the collection was called “Be Bahrain” and was launched at ArtBaB in the year 2019, and was subsequently displayed at La Biennale Palace in Paris. The popularity of the first edition prompted the transformation of “Be Bahrain” into “Tarakeeb,” a platform created with the goal of providing a contemporary spin on traditional craft without diluting the essence of Bahrain’s cultural heritage and artisanal tradition.

This chic and modern collection of bespoke pieces and lifestyle retail was first put together by Kaneka Subberwal and Indian fashion designer JJ Valaya, under “The Bahrain Room” project, which was featured in the “Artisans Across Borders” initiative.

“The Bahrain Room” was exuberant in its approach and showcased beautiful creations by the local artisans – wood carvers, gypsum engravers, copper nail workers, etc. The project was a celebration of Bahrain’s cultural and creative heritage.

“Tarakeeb” is a unique collection inspired by the elegance, purity, and dignity of Bahrain with a semblance of hand techniques that transcend across borders. The elegant collection exemplifies local Bahraini artisans, sustainable produce, and natural fibre. It is a celebration of the weave—the threads! It incorporates the fabric weaving technique of Bani Jamra, a small village just off the coast of Bahrain’s capital city, Manama. The technique carries a significant piece of the island’s culture, and it has been practised by generations of local artisans. It entails interlacing two distinct sets of wool to create a distinctly Bahraini pattern that is both intricately detailed and vibrantly coloured.

The collection adds an additional zest by infusing the traditional Bahraini embroidery technique of Al-Naqda into its contemporary collection. Al Naqda art is an ancient Bahraini tradition in which women’s clothing was hand embroidered with real silver thread using a special needle.

Tarakeeb Across Borders (TAB)

Bahrain has a rich and unique art landscape! And it must be showcased. Art should never be confined within the four walls of an artist’s studio. It must move out, inspire, motivate, and reward everyone.

“Tarakeeb Across Borders” is the region’s first artisanal movement, bringing in artisans, designers, and creatives from all over the world in the fields of fashion, accessories, and products, with a pavilion dedicated to Bahrain. This initiative will not only promote and showcase young Bahraini talent but will also aid in collaboration and the importation of labor/artisans needed to increase capacity and performance.
